  • Carpentry: New Front Entrance
  • Blown in Insulation
  • Exterior Painting
  • Roofing

This project was for home owners who were interested in James Hardie® Fiber-Cement Siding and found out about us through the James Hardie website because we are one of their "preferred" installers. These home owners were ready for an updated look and wanted preserve their old home.

First we started with the surface preparation for the project. We took off all existing gutters and shutters. We also stripped all of the existing aluminum, vinyl, wood shingles and wood clapboards. Then United did the blown insulation for all areas with loose insulation including the attic floor to make their home more energy efficient. Afterward we repaired and replaced many rotted areas of sheathing.

Next we applied all new Tyvek® home wrap, aluminum drip caps for window/door trim flashing, and stainless Ring-Shank siding fasteners.  After that we installed James Hardie® pre-primed fiber cement clapboards.

The next area of focus was the new entrance way. United drew up a new plan for the entrance way and the customer liked it. We framed the structure with ridge vents, rafters and ledger board tying it into the wall of the main house. Next we shingled the roof with asphalt shingles and installed aluminum drip edge. Then we built in two new fiber glass columns for a regal look. Afterward we put in new cellular PVC bead board for ceiling, fascia for front and sides, and new soffit under the eves.

Then United installed cellular PVC to: flat window casings, flat corner boards, fascia and soffit panels and rake boards. After that we installed the new white Seamless Gutters with gutter guards "waterfall". We also installed new black shutters from Harvey Industries®.

In conclusion we painted all of the new clapboards with two coats of latex Sherwin Williams® super paint with a flat finish. Then we painted all the rest of the exterior with two coats of latex Sherwin Williams® super paint with a satin finish. Take a look at this transformation.

What We Did

  • Removed all the existing roofing, flashings and backing paper
  • Installed new roofing shingles, flashings and underlayment
  • Replaced some rotted wood clapboards on the left side of the house, front of the house and the entire right side of the house
  • Painted the whole exterior

This house was built in 1984 and it had a combination of different issues. The roof was the original roof, so it was about 24 years old and needed to be replaced. The customer will be selling the house within a few years, so they wanted it to be in good shape for the sale to get the most money for their property.

We replaced the existing roof with Certainteed Landmark® 30-year shingles, 6 feet of ice-and-water shield called Winterguard® by CertainTeed, 30 pound Roofer's Select® felt underlayment, and 8 inch flashing along all the edges.

The roof was completed quickly, but there was still more work to be done on the siding.

Carpentry was next on the checklist for this home improvement project. The customer loved that we had specialized craftsman for each project (roofer's who roof, carpenters who do carpentry, etc.). The right side of the house was the worst because of the sun, and it was in bad shape (see picture).

We took off all of the existing siding on the side and replaced it with primed James Hardie Fiber Cement Siding "smooth style" to match the rest of the house. James Hardie Fiber Cement siding holds up much better in the extreme weather than wood, so this was the perfect solution for this area of the house.

There was also other issues with the front door frame threshold (wood under the door), and some of the clapboards on the left side of the house. We replaced all the rot, so we were ready to paint.

Finally, we painted the exterior of the house for the finishing touch. We painted it with the same color scheme as it was before, but with the carpentry and new paint, everything looked great. The customer will be moving and said she will use us again in her new house for any of her home improvement needs.

At the end of the job the customer said "I was very pleased with the service and the quality of the job. The crew was very friendly and conscientious. In addition, they were responsive to new issues that popped up!"

What We Did

  • Removed all existing Masonite siding
  • Installed James Hardie Cedarmill Clapboards 5”
  • Installed Cellular PVC trim
  • Painted with Sherwin Williams Resilience Paint

This 1970's colonial style home in Westford, MA was in need of some serious care. The masonite siding was in really bad shape because moisture was absorbing in the composite siding.

Unfortunately with masonite, when this happens, it is unfixable and the siding must be replaced.

The customer was looking for a siding contractor in Westford, MA that could handle a project with the attention to detail, to get his house looking the way he wanted.

We first removed the Masonite siding that was rotting in many places. As siding contractors in Massachusetts we are experienced in removing all types of siding from Cedar clapboard, to aluminum siding, to asphalt shingle siding and everything in between.

We then wrapped the house with a moisure barrier, Tyvek® Homewrap. The customer choose to match the existing style of siding to be installed, so we put up James Hardie Cedarmill or Woodgrain style clapboards. This fiber cement siding product is designed to look like cedar clapboards, but it is low maintenance.

To complement their new low-maintenance siding we installed low maintenance cellular PVC trim on their cornerboards, window and door frames, garage door frames, and rakes.

Some of the siding rot had spread to the trim and framing of the house. Our experienced carpenters reframed the studs between the 1st and 2nd floor on the back of the house, replaced 6 sheets of plywood, and 6 window sills. The water caused a lot of damage underneath the siding, which we could not see until it was taken off, but we took care of all issues properly and the homeowner was very pleased how we handled the different issues.

The final step was to bring in our team of painters. Our painters have more experience coating fiber cement siding then any other company in New England, they practically specialize in painting fiber cement siding.

The goal was to replace what was necessary but they did not want complete siding replacement. They were thrilled to know that as a local contractor, United could handle all aspects of the exterior contracting project providing exactly what they needed in exterior solutions.

We first identified failing siding sections and removed rotten siding and rotten trim. On the tall peaks the customer wanted a low maintenance solution to achieve the look of natural cedar shingles without the need for repainting. We installed James Hardie Fiber Cement shingles and painted them to match the house color. They also wanted a very durable clapboard product they could use for their front entrance that would stand up against abuse. We installed James Hardie Fiber cement clapboard siding because they wanted to look like natural cedar siding, but wanted low maintenance. Where we removed the cedar clapboard siding and cedar shingles we installed a layer of Tyvek Home Wrap to protect against wind and moisture infiltration. As local siding contractors in Massachusetts we are experienced in removing all types of siding from Cedar clapboard, to aluminum siding, to asphalt shingle siding, to asbestos siding and everything in between.

We were able to maintain the original character and charm by replicating the original architecture of the property. After wrapping the sections of the house with a moisture barrier, Tyvek® Homewrap, and installing the siding, our painters did a thorough scraping, sanding and priming of the house to get it ready for exterior painting. In Massachusetts, you need to take special care to proper preparation of wood siding so that the exterior paint will hold. As local painting contractors we guarantee our exterior paint project for up to 2 years with a written paint warranty.

To achieve the look the customers were after, we used decorative trim with some contoured detail that really finished the house. As a Massachusetts window installer we were able to provide very affordable replacement windows made by Simonton. The customer wanted an affordable replacement window for their third floor attic. What We Did

  • James Hardie® Fiber cement siding
  • Tyvek® House wrap
  • Sherwin Williams paint

This customer contacted us because the paint on the back of their house was no longer holding to the siding. Even the best painter couldn't solve this problem.

As siding contractors in massachusetts we have to be flexible with the siding options we offer our customers. Different sidings are suitable for different towns and neighborhoods.

We began this project by removing the existing siding from the back of the house. Then we installed Tyvek® HomeWrap paper to protect the home from the rain and snow.

Then we installed new James Hardie Hardiplank pre-primed fiber cement siding in the Cedarmill style.

After installing the new siding, we painted in with Sherwin Williams® paint. It's nice to be able to offer customers siding and painting so they don't have to hire another painter.
