Roofing That Qualifies For the Federal Tax Credit

We’ve been getting a lot of inquiries about whether or not there are any asphalt roof shingles that qualify for the Federal tax credit for energy efficient improvements.  The answer is YES!  For specifics on your territory consult a local roofing contractor.

We recommend Certainteed® roofing materials over any other roofing products on the market.  Certainteed® has a proven track record for quality, and they have the best warranty program available to homeowners.  Not all Certainteed roofing products are available in New England, but there are a few that do qualify for the tax credit.

Certainteed® has recently developed Landmark Solaris® shingles which all meet the standards for the federal tax credit.  These are high quality shingles and therefore come at a premium cost so it may not make sense to have them installed just for the sake of getting money back with the Federal Tax Credit.  However, Certainteed® also has a few roofing shingle colors within the Landmark® architectural line of shingles that qualify for the tax credit.  These colors are Silver Birch, Mist White, and Star White.  What this means is, you can get 30% back of the cost of materials when you file your taxes for 2009.

Thanks United for the nice compliment! We're very proud of being able to lead the industry in creating this whole new category of roofing products that actually helps improve energy efficiency.

Great write up on the tax credit. There is lots of misinformation on the net about the tax credit, but this blog is right on the money! (no pun intended)

What about the Owens Corning Duration Series Sierra Grey. Does that qualify and how does it compare to the Certainteed if it does.

Thank you.

There's nothing on Owens Corning Website about whether or not the Duration shingles qualify, so I assume they do not. However, I put in a request for clarification and as soon as I hear I'll update this post.

Do Landmark 30 shingles qualify for the credit? Thanks.

At this point the only Certainteed Landmark 30 shingle qualifies for the Tax Credit is in color Birchwood. The color Birchwood is only available in certain regions, but we've arranged to have available in our territory here in eastern New England.

I have received a quote from a reputable roofer to re-do my roof and he has recommended I go with the Landmark Silver Birch which qualifies for the Energy Tax Credit. I live in western NY near Rochester and we have harsh winters that can last from October to March and usually only 2 really hot, sunny months in July and August (if we're lucky). I would like to know if this an appropriate shingle for my climate. I don't want to decide to get this shingle just to get the tax credit if it is not appropriate. Also, would you estimate that I could save money if I go with a non-reflective shingle that doesn't qualify for the tax credit?

Joy,

Excellent question. In a Northern Climate do not expect to see a significant decrease in cooling costs with a lighter shingle. On the flip side, if you have sufficient attic ventilation you should not expect a darker shingle to heat your house in the winter. Ultimately you want the temperature in your attic space to be as close as possible to the exterior temperature year round. Does that make sense? I'd recommend using the Silver Birch shingle if you like the color, and want to receive the tax credit. But don't use it that shingle with the expectation of saving money on your cooling bill.

June 16-21, 2010, Manucy Roofing in St augustine, Fl. instastalled a new roof on my home. I had specified that a material qualifying for the tax credit be installed. Mr Manucy brought me several samples of roofing material advising me that the lighter colored roofing qualified for the tax credit. It is my understanding that only the materials used qualify for the tax credit, not the labor. So far, with many communiques with Mr. Manucy, I havde not been able to get a figure from him regarding the cost of the material. Is there anyway you can help me out with this?? He keeps avoiding the question! Sarah Alter

Did you ever find out if the Owens Corning shingles qualified for the tax credit? Thanks

Deb,

I tried contacting them back when you first asked, but I never received a response. It will depend on the specific color. If you have record of the specific color then try calling their customer service line at: 1-800-438-7465. Hope that helps.

In the summer of 2010 I had your Premier Presidential Weathered Wood Asphalt shingles installed. Do they qualify for the tax credit?
Posted @ Sunday, April 10, 2011 11:59 AM by Robert Skibcki
You say you had "our Premier Presidential Weathered Wood Asphalt shingles installed." Sorry for any confusion but we are not a shingle manufacturer. We are a roofing contractor serving New England. But still happy to help! I am 99% sure the Weathered Wood color does NOT qualify for Tax Credit, it's just too dark. You would have to check with your local supplier or the company who installed it to be 100% sure. Hope that helps.
