We began the project by stripping the existing shingles, flashing and backing paper. Once we removed the backing paper, we were able to see the extensive rot that was taking place underneath her shingles.

The customer was grateful she chose us over another contractor who was interested in just covering over her shingles.

We installed blown in insulation and then replaced several pieces of sheathing We also replaced 3 windows with Simonton Generations® triple pane double hung window

What We Did

  • Removed and Replaced all Exterior Cedar Siding and Aluminum Siding
  • Removed 3 Tab Composite Roofing Shingles
  • Installed new Architectural Certainteed Roofing Shingles
  • Exterior Painting with Sherwin Williams Resilience Exterior Paint

This 200 year old building in Cambridge, Massachusetts was in need of some serious care. The building located in a historical district had been abused and mistreated over the years and lost its original historical integrity.

The owners wanted to bring the building back to its 1700's beauty and so did the historical commission of the neighborhood. As historical contracting specialists we were able to meet with historical commission and owners to provide a long lasting siding solution while at the same time maintaining the original historical integrity of the siding.

To start we removed the old aluminum siding and discovered older failing cedar siding. When the siding was removed it exposed failing sheathing and rotten wood that needed to be replaced. Plywood sheathing was installed and Tyvek HomeWrap® was applied to protect the house from moisture damage and wind.

Being local siding contractors, we were able to provide the perfect siding option which is resistant to rot and will hold exterior paint for up to 20 years or more. This siding is a fiber cement siding made by James Hardie company, called HardiePlank Siding.

Fibercement siding contractors, such as United Home Experts, are certified siding installers and we take extra care when installing it. Especially in a historical town like Cambridge, MA, the details mattered.

The goal was to achieve the original look while, at the same time, creating a low maintenance siding solution that looks like wood. To achieve this we also used Cellular PVC trim boards them used Sherwin Williams exterior paint to finish the building off. As experienced MA painters, the finish looks amazing.

We also replaced the existing 3-tab roofing material with architectural roof shingles by CertainTeed roofing based in Norwood MA. As certified Massachusetts SELECT Shingle Roofers®, we were able to offer a 20-year warranty on the roof. Most roofing contractors in MA will only give a 5-year warranty at best. The mansard roof took extra care to make sure the historical look was maintained.

In the end we were able turn a neglected and abused historical house into its original look using modern fiber cement siding, lifetime paint coatings, and long lasting roof. This historical Cambridge neighborhood was very happy with the transformation from old ugly aluminum siding to new freshly painted Hardie siding. They were especially impressed a local contracting company could do all aspects of the siding, roofing and painting.

What We Did

  • James Hardie® Shingles
  • Soffit & crown molding repair
  • New basement windows: Simonton® 5500
  • Exterior painting: Sherwin Williams®

This Cambridge, MA exterior project included a whole array of different projects. The customer decided to use James Hardie® un-primed individual shingles with laced corners and an 8" exposure.

We first started with the surface preparation for the project and removed all existing siding. Our carpenters then repaired and replaced many rotted areas of sheathing.

Next we applied all new Tyvek® home wrap, anodized aluminum drip caps for window/door trim flashing, and stainless steel ring shank siding fasteners.

Cellular PVC was applied to a number of areas including all windows frames, all crown molding in front and back of gables, newly replaced soffit bead boards that were rotting, and door frames to all doors leading outside.

The 8 new basement windows that were installed were white Simonton 5500 series®, double pane, low-e with argon glazing. These are very energy efficient and are surely to save money on energy in the years to come.

Lastly, it was time to paint the newly installed shingles. Our painters used a tinted latex primer to the dark topcoat color the customer desired. Only 1 coat of paint is required with this preparation technique. We also did a partial re-glaze of all windows that were missing putty. We applied the paint to all body, trim, and doors. The metal garage door was prepped a bit differently, and included 1 coat of metal primer and 1 coat of latex paint. All are surely to breathe new light into this property.

  • Painting & Staining: Sherwin Williams®

This customer was looking for a siding installer who could replace their stucco and aluminum siding because it was old, outdated and falling apart. Here you can see what the house looked like before.

We began this project by stripping all of the aluminum siding and wrapped it with Tyvek® house wrap to protect it from water damage and rot.

After prepping the home, we installed new James Hardie® fiber cement clapboards at 4" exposures. We also installed James Hardie® fiber cement shingles at 7" on rounded turret in the front of the house. Then we installed all new PVC trim to all rakes fascias, soffits watertable, and window frames.

You can see in this picture that the porch was literally falling apart, so we constructed a new front porch with a new column and railings. The flooring was made from Brazilian hardwood and the railings where made from cedar.

Then we painted the home with Sherwin Williams paint®. The customers were very pleased that they chose us as their Hardie® siding installer and I'm sure you can see why. They also appreciated that our painters specialize in coating fiber cement siding.
